    Wind turbulence inputs for horizontal axis wind turbines

    Wind turbine response characteristics in the presence of atmospheric turbulence was predicted using two major modeling steps. First, the important atmospheric sources for the force excitations felt by the wind turbine system were identified and characterized. Second, a dynamic model was developed which describes how these excitations are transmitted through the structure and power train. The first modeling step, that of quantifying the important excitations due to the atmospheric turbulence was established. The dynamic modeling of the second step was undertaken separately

    Modelling the influence of personality and culture on affect and enjoyment in multimedia

    Affect is evoked through an intricate relationship between the characteristics of stimuli, individuals, and systems of perception. While affect is widely researched, few studies consider the combination of multimedia system characteristics and human factors together. As such, this paper explores the influence of personality (Five-Factor Model) and cultural traits (Hofstede Model) on the intensity of multimedia-evoked positive and negative affects (emotions). A set of 144 video sequences (from 12 short movie clips) were evaluated by 114 participants from a cross-cultural population, producing 1232 ratings. On this data, three multilevel regression models are compared: a baseline model that only considers system factors; an extended model that includes personality and culture; and an optimistic model in which each participant is modelled. An analysis shows that personal and cultural traits represent 5.6% of the variance in positive affect and 13.6% of the variance in negative affect. In addition, the affect-enjoyment correlation varied across the clips. This suggests that personality and culture play a key role in predicting the intensity of negative affect and whether or not it is enjoyed, but a more sophisticated set of predictors is needed to model positive affect with the same efficacy

    Estimates of Effective Hubbard Model Parameters for C20 isomers

    We report on an effective Hubbard Hamiltonian approach for the study of electronic correlations in C20_{20} isomers, cage, bowl and ring, with quantum Monte Carlo and exact diagonalization methods. The tight-binding hopping parameter, tt, in the effective Hamiltonian is determined by a fit to density functional theory calculations, and the on-site Coulomb interaction, U/tU/t, is determined by calculating the isomers' affinity energies, which are compared to experimental values. For the C20_{20} fullerene cage we estimate tcage0.681.36t_{\rm cage}\simeq 0.68-1.36 eV and (U/t)cage7.112.2(U/t)_{\rm cage} \simeq 7.1-12.2. The resulting effective Hamiltonian is then used to study the shift of spectral peaks in the density of states of neutral and one-electron-doped C20_{20} isomers. Energy gaps are also extracted for possible future comparison with experiments.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure

    Richardson approach provides an exact solution of the pairing Hamiltonian. This Hamiltonian is characterized by the electron-hole pairing symmetry, which is however hidden in Richardson equations. By analyzing this symmetry and using an additional conjecture, fulfilled in solvable limits, we suggest a simple expression of the ground state energy for an equally-spaced energy-level model, which is applicable along the whole crossover from the superconducting state to the pairing fluctuation regime. Solving Richardson equations numerically, we demonstrate a good accuracy of our expression.Comment: 9 pages, 1 figure; accepted for publication in Eur. Phys. J.
